Name on a Stone
He works hard for his family to eat
He grows tobacco on Lee County’s seat
Pays for his sugar on credit and time
He’s trusted for his promised pennies and dimes
When his momma got sick, he moved her on in
Forgetting that she made life hard as a kid
When she passed on, something easy for some
Would be almost impossible on farmer’s income
He can’t afford a name on a stone
He’ll have to bury his mother alone
Her place throughout history will soon be unknown
’Cause he can’t afford a name on a stone
A couple years passed, he was right there again
His wife was so sick, and her chances looked grim
Soon she passed on and when that day came
He hung his head ‘cause he felt such a shame
He can’t afford a name on a stone
He’ll have to bury his sweetheart alone
Her place throughout history will soon be unknown
’Cause he can’t afford a name on a stone
But he wouldn’t let such a fate come to pass
He went to the funeral home with a question to ask
They talked for a while and they worked out a plan
He’d pay off that epitaph in a ten year span
He couldn’t afford a name on a stone
But what money can’t buy, hard work can attone
Her place throughout history will always be known
Now that her name was put on a stone
It might seem small, but when kindness was shown
A man who had nothing had a name on a stone
