Layla Jo

She was a sweet young thing with the dark brown hair
And the eyes that’d make her daddy cry
He was a big, bad man, he weren’t looking for love
He had a face that’d make the ladies sigh
They were just two young lovers, like a Romeo and Juliet
Destined by the stars to die
But her daddy had other plans, shaking hands
Carried out undercover of the night

Pretty soon they fell in love, started courting pretty heavy
Started making future plans to be
She knew her daddy didn’t like him and he’d prob’ly try to
Fight him if his face he were to see
But, she knew she was his daughter, so she tried to calm
The waters, met her daddy for plea
But all he had to say as he turned his head away
Was, “It’s like this to me…”

He said he gon’ get my blessing, no
He gon’ get my Layla Jo
He gon’ get my blessing when they lay me in the ground

Well Layla fell away, thought she’d try another day
Went back to her man
Told him all the things he said, didn’t wanna find him dead
But he said he’d make a stand
So he loaded up the car, turned the radio on
And he drove down 29
Pulled up to the house and her daddy was out
With his hand on a 45

He said you gon’ get my blessing, no
You gon’ get my Layla Jo
You gon’ get my blessing when they lay me in the ground

Gun fire and the shimmer of silver
Flying through the air
One was worried about poor Layla
One just didn’t care

And I said I don’t need your blessing, no
I’m gon’ get your Layla Jo
I’m gon’ hold her pretty hand when they lay you in the ground
